Job 38:4-11 - How did I lay the foundation
for the earth?
Were you there?
Doubtless you know who decided
its length and width. What supports the foundation?
Who placed the cornerstone, while morning stars sang,
and angels rejoiced? When the ocean was born,
I set its boundaries and wrapped it in blankets
of thickest fog. Then I built a wall around it,
locked the gates, and said, "Your powerful waves stop here!
They can go no farther." (Contemporary English Version)
After a long period of silence, God speaks to Job and asks him a series of
questions. Those quoted above are just a few. One cannot read this passage
without thinking how amazing God's creation is. Through these rhetorical
questions God reminds us that His creation was orderly and purposeful. He
measured it, He marked it, He laid the cornerstone. That same God created
you and me. By the way - I recommend Chuck Swindoll's book, Job: A Man of
Heroic Endurance, for a great look at the many lessons applicable to us from
the life of Job.
